Kammertonen #2

Performance for electric bass, acoustic feedback, room and audience

Kammertonen was first developed and performed in 2013 at Tårnet, a gallery for sound accumulating art at PB43 in Copenhagen. The work begins by listening to the performance space: an electric bass is tuned to its resonant frequencies and placed where those within the instrument’s range converge. The performance unfolds as a negotiation between taming and releasing the feedback that arises among room, instrument and performer.

For Kammertonen #2, the audience became part of that negotiation. Invited to move through the room and locate points of particularly intense resonance, they traced its acoustics with their bodies. Their positions formed a spatial map of the sounding relationship between bass and room.

The performance was followed by a communal dinner. Where people had gathered in response to the sound helped determine where they sat, carrying the work’s acoustic exploration into the social space of the meal.
